The drive from his Grants office to Albuquerque took him a little over two hours. Agent Graves was frustrated that the Sheriff told him he had to leave the office space because the county needed space for an investigation. Tom was getting nervous and Graves knew it. Working a matter of a few doors down from the Sheriff a few days a week never seemed to spook Tom. The pressure Greenley was exerting on him, however, was a different story.
Getting to the offices at the Federal building, Graves was anxious to hear the conversation the Sheriff had been having in the past two days. Something was getting ready to break in this case if Tom’s foul mood was any indication.
The nervous IT tech, Grave had been working with, was agitated when he saw Graves, “Oh, thank God, you are here. I think we have a problem.”
‘Slow down, Sullivan, let me get my jacket off. And get a cup of coffee,” once Graves settled into a chair he looked at the tech.
“OK, here are the transcripts I told you about over the phone. We know the Sheriff has had contact with one of the ranch hands who has been reporting in regularly. Greenley made contact with the Sheriff too. From there the Sheriff has been calling the main ranch house number every 15 minutes. So far, he has only left one message for her. He has hung up before the machine catches the other attempts.” Sullivan said as the recording equipment indicated another call on the Sheriff’s phone.
Sullivan looked over at it and said. “It’s incoming, looks like the call is coming from the Davenport Ranch.”
Graves held his breath as he listened to the conversation between Dawn and Tom. Then Tom’s angry return response when he was hung up on. Then the interrupted conversation between Tom and Reno as Tom said to take care of Dawn permanently this time.
“Oh, hell. No way can we avoid doing something now. Notify Cooper of what is happening. Get ahold of legal and get me the warrants I need. I am going to put a team together and get down there,” Graves said.
Before 5 a.m. there was another call on Tom’s phone from Greenley. Greenley was apparently fed up with the lack of progress Tom was making. He told Tom he was sending someone who knew how to eliminate the problem. Tom was to expect him in the next few days.
Graves gave out orders and made phone calls shaking as he went. And this shaking was not because he needed a drink. No, this was pure adrenalin surging, with an intense sense of urgency to get this thing moving. He was hoping they could pull things together in time to prevent any kind of bloodshed.
